Alexander S. Korolkoff, 81, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2025 in Kingston, NY. Born in West Germany on December 5, 1944 to the late Sergei & Elizabeth Korolkoff, his life was filled with an appreciation for beauty, art, friendships, and experiences.
As a young man, Alex proudly served in the Navy as a sonar technician during the Vietnam war. After his honorable discharge, he began his career as a stagehand with IATSE Local #1, beginning as an apprentice at The Metropolitan Opera, and continuing at ABC studios as a scenic carpenter, where no design or task would prove too complex for his masterful woodworking skills.
Upon retiring, Alex moved to his beloved home in the Catskills, where he immersed himself in the tranquil beauty of his mountain surroundings. He loved tending to his land; mowing winding paths through the woods (often wearing a pith helmet for safety and comedic purposes), befriending the local chipmunks, tracking the nesting bluebirds, noting the changes in the seasons.
Alex’s keen eye and passion for a good yard sale or flea market was unmatched, and he made many friends while trading stories over tables of treasures. Volunteering at the Phoenicia Formerly Yours Thrift Shoppe, he shared his time and talents with the community. Ever creative, he loved to restore and repurpose his finds, often turning them into fantastical sculptures or gifts for family and friends. A masterful pool player and a vicious card shark, he always valued the camaraderie of a good game more than winning (but he usually won).
Alexander S. Korolkoff’s life was a tapestry woven with service, empathy, humor, kindness and playful curiosity. He will be remembered as a man who lived fully, loved deeply, and left a lasting impression on the hearts of all who knew him.
He is survived by his steadfast wife, Margaret, his cherished daughter, Lily, and her husband Ben, and his beloved son, Sasha, and his wife Gemma. His legacy lives on through his adored grandchildren Theodore, Harry, and Charlie, who will carry forward the joy and wisdom he imparted.
A celebration of life will take place in the Spring. You may share a special memory, photo or condolence with the family on Alex's Tribute Wall at www.gormleyfuneralhome.com
